Kent Police Band

Introduction and history

The Kent Police Band was formed in 1977 by serving police officers. Today the band consists of both serving and retired officers together with civilian members.

The band performs at various venues, both public and private, including indoor and outdoor concerts, marching displays and processions.

The fanfare team performs at ceremonial events and other special occasions.

History

The Kent Police Band was formed after three colleagues expressed an interest in getting a brass band together. The first rehearsal involved over 40 enthusiastic officers under the direction of Alan Collins, the then musical director of the Medway Towns Band.

Originally the band was composed only of police officers, but later extended membership to civilian colleagues and members of the public.

Over the years the band has given performances in various parts of the country as well as America, France, Holland, Germany, Norway and Denmark.

It has also performed in front of members of the royal family, including the Queen, and more recently, at 10 Downing Street for the police bravery awards.

The current musical director is John Groves.

The Kent Police Band has performed at a police bravery awards ceremony held at 10 Downing Street. They were invited following their performance at the unveiling of the Police Memorial in London.
