Purse theft adviceMobile phones

  • register your phone with your network operator
  • keep details of your IMEI number (a 15 digit serial number) and phone number safe - you can find out your IMEI number by keying *#06# into your phone
  • use your phone's security lock if it has one
  • stay alert when out and about - your phone is a valuable item and one that is frequently targetted by thieves
  • avoid using your phone in crowded areas or where you might feel unsafe
  • don't leave your phone visible in your car when unattended
  • property mark your phone with your door number and postcode

If your mobile is stolen

Report the number of your stolen phone to your network operator and the police as soon as you can. It can then be cancelled quickly, in the same way as a stolen credit card.

Credit cards

If your cards are stolen

Contact your bank or credit card company as soon as possible. Make sure you keep the emergency number to hand. Most thieves will withdraw cash quickly as they know you will block the cards as soon as you realise what's happened.

ImmobiliseRegister your property with Immobilise

Consider registering your phone with Immobilise.com, the free national UK property register which helps recover property and trace owners.
