Expectations and eligibility

Play a key role in Kent's extended policing team

Officer and member of the public

Special constables in Kent support regular officers and make a significant contribution to the development of neighbourhood policing. This includes:

  • liaising with local communities
  • tackling anti-social behaviour
  • policing special events (for example parades, carnivals and sporting events)
  • managing traffic
  • roads policing
  • drugs enforcement
  • developing crime prevention initiatives

Our expectations

As a special constable we expect you to perform 16 hours of duty a month as well as attend training.

You will need to commit to a two-week forecast of duties. This enables us to make sure you are properly and effectively deployed.

You will also be expected to commit to the role for a minimum of two years.

Who we are looking for

We particularly welcome applications from women, members of minority ethnic groups and members of the lesbian and gay community.

Eligibility

To be a Special Constable you must be:

  • a British, Commonwealth, European Economic Area (EEA) citizen or have an indefinite right to stay in the UK
  • of good character (ideally you should not have a criminal record but some minor offences may not exclude you)
  • physically and mentally fit and in good health.

Members of certain professions are legally restricted from serving as a Special Constable, including:

  • security officers
  • members of the armed forces
