Officers in training

To give you an idea of the time commitment needed to train to become a Special, a sample programme is outlined in our download area. Training is a vital part of becoming a Special Constable.

Due to the volume of information that is delivered in the training, all student officers will have to complete the full training course. If a student is unavailable for the sessions, they may have to retake the course.

Foundation level 1 subjects include:

  • role of the constable
  • human rights
  • powers of arrest
  • diversity
  • the caution and its use
  • dealing with the public/making an arrest
  • health and safety
  • crime scene preservation, crime scene reporting
  • the judicial system
  • stop and search powers
  • preventive offences
  • police communications
  • domestic violence
  • dealing with motorists
  • anti-social behaviour

Knowledge checks are used throughout the course and students will have tutorials to assess and discuss progress.
