What duties can I perform?
Duties are many and varied. They may include foot patrol with a neighbourhood policing officer, crowd and traffic control at special events such as Brands Hatch races or general response patrols with regular officers. In general, Specials take part in most areas of policing.
What powers will I have?
A special constable has the same powers as a regular police officer, but can only exercise those powers in April 2007 the powers of a Special Constable were extended to cover all of England and Wales.
Do I get paid?
Special constables do not get paid, they perform their duties on a voluntary basis. However, expenses are paid and uniforms and equipment are provided for free.
Is there scope for promotion?
Yes. The Kent Special Constabulary has various ranks starting with a Special Constable, Parish Special Constable, Special Sergeant, Special Inspector, Special Superintendent through to Chief Officer, the most senior officer of the Kent Special Constabulary.
Is joining the Specials a stepping stone to joining the regular police?
Yes. It is an excellent way of experiencing policing in Kent and many Specials go on to become regular, full-time officers. However, we are keen to invest in people who will continue to be a Special. We will continue to create opportunities to suit those willing to give back to the community on a voluntary basis. All we ask is that you volunteer for a period of around 2 years.
How many hours a month will I need to do?
We ask for a minimum of sixteen hours per month. Additionally once a week you are expected to attend two hours of ongoing training in the evening.
Can I choose my hours?
Yes. On occasions you will be asked to police specific events such as air shows, parades and concerts.
Do I have to take a fitness test?
You will need to be screened by our Occupational Health Department and expected to have a reasonable level of fitness. You will be required to pass the Kent Police fitness test.
