Helping the victims of domestic abuse

Detective Inspector Louise Ludwig

Support

In this week's Kent Police column, Detective Inspector Louise Ludwig, who leads the Canterbury public protection unit, has advice for anyone who may be suffering domestic abuse.

Seasonal stress

'The festive Christmas and New Year season is supposed to be a time of joy, but it can also be a very stressful time too for many families.

'Money worries and emotional stress, combined with increased levels of alcohol consumption, can lead to arguments which spiral out of control and result in violence in the family home.

'Domestic abuse affects people in all walks of life and from all cultural backgrounds and, whatever the circumstances, it is never acceptable. It is important that victims of domestic abuse realise that help is out there and they do not need to suffer in silence.'

Report domestic abuse

'In an emergency, if your life is in danger or a crime is in progress, always dial 999.  For non-emergencies, you can contact the Canterbury Domestic Abuse Unit on 01227 868112, where you can speak to specially trained domestic abuse officers who can give you guidance and advice.'
