Hail a Hackney returns to Thanet

The scheme provides a safe place for late-night revellers to wait for transport home

Hail a Hackney is back in Thanet this year - and this time it has been extended to serve Ramsgate's revellers.

The successful scheme, first rolled out during the festive season of 2007, was up and running for Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and will be in place for New Year's Eve at the taxi ranks in Margate's Marine Terrace and Harbour Parade in Ramsgate.

Safe waiting area for party-goers

The idea is to provide a safe waiting area for well-behaved partygoers to queue for official transport home. It is hoped this will deter illegal plying for hire and prevent the potential for disorder.

Taxi marshals will be on duty and will work with police officers, council staff, CCTV operators and door supervisors to manage the arrival of people and taxis. Teams will also conduct checks at pubs and bars during the night to ensure licence terms are being observed.

Hail a Hackney operates between 11pm and 3.30am. Police will be placing and enforcing 'no waiting' cones in these areas from 6pm. Motorists, including blue badge holders, are asked to respect the markings or risk a fixed penalty ticket, summons or their vehicle being towed away.

The scheme has been possible thanks to money from the Safer Stronger Communities Fund (SSCF).

Helping you get home safely and quickly

Chief Inspector Mitchell Fox said: 'We want everyone to enjoy their Christmas nights out in Thanet and that they prove to be memorable for all the right reasons. If people work with us on this, we will do all we can to make sure they get home safely and quickly.'

SSCF programme manager Carla Wenham-Jones said: 'I'm delighted we have been able to fund Hail a Hackney for another year. Last time, 1,450 people used the service to take them back home to their doorstep. We are building on past success and doing our best to ensure festive fun for all.'
