Three neighbourhood officers from Margate are learning sign language so they can be an even bigger help to people in their community.

Cliftonville West PC Alex Taylor and PCs Janine Fordom and Terry Vine, who look after Margate Central, contacted the Royal School for Deaf Children in Victoria Road for guidance and are now taking the year-long course, having been invited to take part by its coordinator, Jon Palmer.

Breaking down barriers

PC Taylor said: 'There are hundreds of people who use this facility and if we can master it, it will break down a few barriers we currently face when it comes to communication and make us even more accessible.'
