Head cameras - FAQs

Officers with head cameras

Can the cameras be used to spy on people?

No. The cameras will be used openly by officers in uniform. There are strict rules and regulations surrounding the use of this type of equipment in the police service. For more information visit the Home Office website.

What happens to the footage once it has been recorded?

The footage is uploaded to a secure stand-alone computer system where footage which could be used as evidence is copied to a master DVD for working purposes. Footage which will not be used as evidence is deleted after 31 days, in accordance with current Association of Chief Police Officers (ACPO) guidelines.

When will police officers be recording?

During the pilot, the cameras will be used to record violence-related incidents in both public and private for example burglary, anti-social behaviour and domestic violence. However the cameras can be used in a wide variety of incidents.

To ensure footage is clear and thorough, once a camera is switched on, it will not be switched off - a member of the public can not ask for the camera to be switched off once filming has started.

How will I know if a police officer is recording me?

Due to the obvious and open nature of the product and the high media coverage, everyone who is involved in a violence-related incident and who comes into contact with officers wearing the head camera should assume that they are being recorded.
