Advice if you are involved in a road traffic collision

Kent Police is committed to providing a high standard of service to all road users in Kent and Medway.

To complement this, Kent Police has produced a collision care pack which will be given to everyone involved in a road traffic collision to guide you through the process.

Our role at a collision

Kent Police officers attend collisions to:

  • make the scene safe
  • help anyone who is injured
  • make sure traffic flows safely and freely where possible
  • arrange the recovery of vehicles
  • collect and record evidence to find out the cause of the collision and to establish whether any offences have been committed
  • provide help and support to those involved who are often frightened and upset.

When officers attend a collision

Kent Police does not need to attend every road
traffic collision in Kent and Medway. This particularly applies when no-one is injured and when driver details are satisfactorily exchanged.

Police attend and investigate when:

  • someone is injured
  • animals are injured and the driver has failed to let the owner know
  • property is damaged and the driver has failed to let the owner know
  • an offence is suspected or alleged
  • a vehicle or road defect is suspected or alleged
  • an involved driver has failed to stop, report the
    incident or give correct details
  • an on-duty police officer is involved.
