Bluetooth technology allows users to send short-range messages between devices (including mobile phones, laptops, printers, cameras and games consoles.)
Risks of Bluetooth
Devices with Bluetooth enabled can be at risk of:
- Cyber bullying - sending or receiving threatening or unpleasant messages
- Contact from strangers
- Hacking.
How to protect yourself
- Turn off your Bluetooth when it's not in use. Check your phone manual for how to do that.
- Keep your Bluetooth 'invisible'. This usually prevents others from ‘detecting’ your device.
- Password protect your device. This just makes it harder for potential hackers to access your device.
- Never pair with an unknown device, particularly in public.
- Switch off your device if you suspect someone is hacking your phone.
- Keep your device up to date. There are software packages available to protect your phone, particularly older phones which are more at risk.
- Keep sensitive data off Bluetooth-enabled devices.
