Wireless internet connection theft

CEOP logoStealing a wireless internet connection is an increasing online threat to web users but it is easy to protect yourself.

'Piggybacking'

'Piggybacking' is when someone taps into a wireless internet service from homes or businesses, without the bill payers knowing.

People can do this from outside your house, for example when walking by, in a nearby car or even by bike.

By leaving yourself open to 'piggybacking,' you could end up footing a bill or be the vicitm of hacking or identity fraud.

Protect your connection

To protect yourself from this crime, switch on the encryption system with your wi-fi software. This means when you access the internet through wi-fi, you will be prompted for a password known only to you.

Also, make sure that you use a good firewall when using the internet.
