Plastic card fraud

Skimming

Skimming occurs where data on your credit /bank card's magnetic strip is electronically copied onto another card without your knowledge.

Skimming normally occurs in retail outlets such as restaurants and petrol stations.

In response to the problem, the banking industry has introduced 'Chip & Pin' cards.

Because the chips are difficult to copy, this type of crime will be significantly reduced.

Reduce the risk:

  • always keep your card in sight while making a transaction
  • if you are suspicious of the way your card has been handled, for example swiped twice through different devices, report it to the police

'Card not present' transactions

These are transactions when card details are used to buy goods or services over the phone, via the internet or by mail order.

Contrary to popular belief the internet is unlikely to be the source the problem. In fact the internet is very safe to use if you take the right precautions.

The fraud occurs when people obtain details of your account from statements and receipts and then use them to buy goods or services without your knowledge.

Reduce the risk:

  • protect items showing account details such as statements and receipts
  • discard these items with care, ideally by shredding
  • check your statements for unfamiliar transactions

When using the internet:

  • use a secure system, not one that has public access
  • protect your PC with security software
  • only buy goods from secure websites of companies you trust

    Lost and stolen

Many thieves will steal handbags and wallets to get credit cards. They know the cards will be blocked once the account holder reports the theft so they will use the card quickly.

    Reduce the risk:

    • keep cards safe at all times
    • only carry those you need
    • report lost/stolen cards immediately to the police and your card issuer. Keep a note of the emergency numbers you should call
    • securely store bank account/contact details in case of loss or theft of cards
    • if a new card or chequebook you were expecting doesn't arrive, contact your bank straightaway in case it has been stolen
    • sign your new card as soon as you receive it  Action Fraud UK
