1.1. This standard operating procedure (SOP) has been reviewed in February 2024 – no amendments to content have been made.
2.1. This SOP outlines the procedures for the issue of an 1810 form (Word) post the use of incapacitant spray.
Compliance with this SOP and any governing policy is mandatory.
3.1. A custody officer must ensure that any detained person who has been sprayed with aerosol incapacitant: is given the form 1810 (advice on aerosol incapacitant contamination) before release from custody; and an entry must be made on the custody record that form 1810 was given and the detained person should be invited to sign the custody record.
3.2. An officer who believes that a person who has not been arrested and has been contaminated with aerosol incapacitant spray must ensure that the person is given the form 1810.
3.3. A record is made in the pocket notebook of the officer giving the notice and the person contaminated is invited to sign the notebook.
3.4. An officer who uses aerosol incapacitant spray in any premises must ensure that the owner/occupier of the premises are given a form 1810 before the officers leave the premises.
3.5. Where aerosol incapacitant is sprayed inside any premises which are then left unattended, a form 1810 must be left clearly displayed.
3.6. A record is to be made in the pocket notebook of the officer who gives form 1810 to an owner/occupier or leaves a form 1810 in unoccupied premises, including where the form 1810 was left.
4.1. An EIA has been carried out and shows the proposals have no potential or actual differential impact on grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, gender, transgender, disability, age, religion or belief or sexual orientation.
5.1. This SOP has been assessed as low risk.
7.1. The SOP will be monitored by the Staff Safety Training Unit every two years. The next review is scheduled for February 2026.
