Careless Margate driver jailed following death of pedestrian

A careless driver from Margate whose actions caused the death of a pedestrian has been jailed.

Jamie Sutton, 30, pleaded guilty before Canterbury Crown Court.

Serious collision

Kent Police was called to a serious collision on Northdown Road in Cliftonville just after 11am on Thursday 18 April 2024.

The grey Audi that Sutton was driving had collided with a man in his 70s from the local area, who was attempting to cross the road.

Officers and paramedics attended and the victim was taken to a London hospital, where he received treatment for multiple serious injuries. After being transferred to a local hospital, and following extensive further treatment, he was discharged. Sadly, in February 2025, the victim died from complications relating to his injuries.

Investigation

The driver was arrested at the scene and an investigation was immediately launched.

Enquiries were completed, which included a media appeal to identify witnesses to the incident, and examining medical and forensic evidence.

It was established that Sutton, formerly of Northdown Road, had been under the influence of cannabis whilst he was behind the wheel. He was later charged.

Jail sentence

He admitted causing death by careless driving whilst under the influence of drugs and was sentenced at the same court on Wednesday 19 August 2026 to 3 and a half years in prison.

Investigating officer, Police Sergeant Luke Olsen, said: ‘This was a devastating case, where a driver’s poor judgment and irresponsible behaviour under the influence of drugs have ultimately resulted in the loss of a much-loved man’s life. ‘Throughout the investigation, officers remained committed to securing evidence to bring the offender before the courts to be held to account. Thanks to their meticulous work, investigators were able to demonstrate the full consequences of Sutton's actions and secure his conviction. It’s right that he is behind bars.’
