A dangerous driver has been jailed after killing a motorcyclist in Sittingbourne.
At 3.20pm on Saturday 23rd April 2022, Collette Gibson was travelling northwards on the A249 Maidstone Road towards the Key Street roundabout when she suddenly stopped without any warning or reason.
A car following her Vauxhall Zafira collided with her vehicle and a motorcyclist riding behind both collided with the rear car.
The rider, a man in his 50s, was declared deceased at the scene.
Detectives launched an investigation into the circumstances and witnesses stated they saw no reason for Gibson to slow or stop. She was subsequently charged with causing death by dangerous driving.
The 55 year old denied the charge at Maidstone Crown Court but was found guilty by a jury at the same court on Wednesday 25 March.
Gibson, of Lime Close, South Ockendon, Essex, was sentenced to five years in prison on Wednesday 20 May 2026. She was also disqualified from driving for four and a half years and will have to complete an extended re-test.
Detective Constable Sara Capozzi said:
‘Gibson’s actions resulted in a man’s death through no fault of his own. ‘She has consistently denied the charge as well as refuting the testimony of numerous witnesses, making her victim’s family relive this tragic incident in court. ‘We are satisfied Gibson will now face the consequence of her actions and we hope this brings some closure to the man’s loved ones.’
