Fraud protection for most vulnerable in society

Fraud prevention talks by Kent Police have been taking place in Sittingbourne to help protect vulnerable people.

Between Monday 21 March and Tuesday 29 March 2022 presentations were held at Bemix, which is an organisation that supports people with learning difficulties.

Sophie Carroll, the force’s North Kent Fraud Prevention Officer was joined by Community Liaison Officer Claire Croucher who helped to raise awareness of the different types of scams that exist and how to avoid becoming a victim.

The talks at the business premises in Park Road included fraud prevention advice, for example taking the time to stop and think before parting with your money, not being afraid to challenge someone to ensure they are who they say they are and refusing requests for personal information.

The officers also talked about what people should do if they find themselves the victim of a scam including contacting your bank straight away.

Sophie said:

‘People who suffer with learning disabilities tend to be more susceptible to frauds as they are much more trusting of others. Criminals can be extremely convincing when they are trying to get you to part with your money or possessions.

'It is so important we provide these sessions to protect those most vulnerable in our society and ensure they receive accurate information about scams which will help them to recognise one if they are ever targeted.’

Terie Fielder, Swale’s Project Leader at Bemix added:

'Many of our people are classed as vulnerable and Sophie and Claire’s visit was really beneficial and appreciated by all those that attended from our adult groups and our Support Employment Programme.

'We now have a much better understanding of how to spot the signs of fraud and everyone that attended came away more informed.’
