Free kits to deter number plate thefts offered to motorists in Folkestone

Motorists in Folkestone are being offered free tamper-proof screws to help secure number plates, following a series of thefts across the district.

On Tuesday 26 March 2024, Kent Police received a report that the front and rear plates had been stolen from a car in Brewer’s Hill, Sandgate.

Vehicles were also targeted earlier in the month in Tram Road; Bouverie Road West; Brenzett, New Romney; Eastbridge Road in Dymchurch and Bartholomew Road in Hythe.

Tamper-proof

Now motorists are able to collect free kits containing tamper-proof screws - designed to be harder to remove - from Folkestone Police Station.

Community Safety Unit Inspector for Folkestone and Hythe, James Wyles, said:

‘Stolen number plates are often used by criminals hoping that they will help shield them from swift identification when carrying out further offences.

‘As part of our strategy to tackle this type of crime, we’re encouraging motorists to take up the offer of the free kits - which I am pleased we are able to provide thanks to Safer Streets 5 funding.

‘Using the tamper-proof screws can help to ensure the security of vehicle plates, as can preventative measures such as parking vehicles in a garage or well-lit secure area whenever possible.’
