Initiative to reduce risk of harm to vulnerable people if they go missing

Families and carers of people who may be vulnerable are being encouraged to participate in an initiative aimed at reducing the risk of harm if they go missing.

Officers from the Tonbridge and Malling Community Safety Unit are taking part in an early prevention scheme, which gathers important information to help locate people who are reported missing, such as those who may be suffering with dementia.

Early intervention

PCSOs have been visiting groups and individuals, including those linked to dementia care and sheltered housing accommodation, where staff and relatives are learning about the At Risk of Going Missing Form.

The form enables Kent Police to quickly access important information in the event of a person going missing.

As well as basic details such as their description, phone number and any medication they may require, the form helps officers to build a picture of areas or specific locations they may head to.

Walking habits, driving patterns, as well as hobbies and details of any previous incidents where vulnerable people may have been reported missing are also logged.

Information can prove crucial

Vulnerable Adult Intervention Officer, PCSO Kim Allen said: ‘Thankfully, the vast majority of people who are reported missing in our communities are often quickly and safely located. What we are trying to do is identify in advance those who are likely to fall into higher risk categories and who could come to harm. 'This could be older people who may get confused as a result of a debilitating illness, or a younger person who may be particularly vulnerable due to having learning difficulties or who is on the autistic spectrum. ‘Relatives and carers are required to obtain consent from any adults who are added to the At Risk of Going Missing Form and we then encourage them to keep a copy of it in a safe but accessible place, so that it can be given quickly to the police or volunteers from Kent Search and Rescue. 'The information provided is often comprehensive and extensive and can be absolutely vital in safely and quickly locating a person, and in turn minimising the distress to that individual and their loved ones.’
