Machete attackers from Ramsgate sent to prison

A jail term has been imposed on two men who broke into a home brandishing machetes.

On April 9 2025, Kent Police received an emergency call at 2.40am from a woman stating her partner had been stabbed multiple times by a masked man. Firearms officers were immediately deployed and arrived at the scene on Boundary Road, Ramsgate, within minutes. However, both suspects had fled the scene moments after the attack.

Patrols administered first aid to the victim, a 23-year-old man, who was then taken to a London hospital with life threatening injuries.

Investigation

An investigation was launched, and it became apparent that the suspects had entered the house through a downstairs window before stealing £500 in cash. The resident told investigators she had recognised the voice of one of the intruders and suspected it was Toby Scales, who was known to her.

CCTV enquiries were completed and two men were seen in a Vauxhall Meriva outside the victim’s home at the time of the offence. Officers attended the address linked to the car the same day. Tyler Walsh was arrested inside his property and a balaclava was seized, as well as a large quantity of cash and a quantity of cocaine.

Scales hid from police for five days before handing himself in at Margate Police Station on 14 April.

Charged

Both suspects were charged with aggravated burglary with intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. Walsh was also charged with possession of cocaine.

They attended Margate Magistrates' Court on 11 April and initially pleaded not guilty to the aggravated burglary charges. However, their plea changed to guilty on the first day of their trial in December.

On Friday 18 September 2026 Scales, 22, of Gwyn Road, Ramsgate, was sentenced to 9 years and Walsh, 29, formerly of Coleman Crescent, Ramsgate, was sentenced to 6 years and 9 months in prison at Canterbury Crown Court.

Detective Constable Karl Shonhard said:

‘This was an extremely violent and unprovoked attack which has left the victims with lifelong physical and psychological damage. Both Walsh and Scales acted with no regard to anyone but themselves and their financial greed. ‘I welcome the sentence passed down today and hope it can provide some closure and comfort to the victims as they continue to heal from the ordeal.’
