A driver has been jailed following a road rage incident near a golf club in Tunbridge Wells.
David Fowkes had a verbal altercation with a golfer at the side of the road before punching the victim and causing him serious injuries.
At around 7.40pm on 16 June 2023, a man was walking along Bayham Road after a round of golf with friends, keeping to the right-hand side as there was no pavement.
Fowkes approached the man in his Vauxhall Corsa but left insufficient space.
The victim expressed his dissatisfaction with the manner of Fowkes’ driving and an argument ensued.
As the disagreement escalated, Fowkes got out of his vehicle and delivered a single punch to the man, causing him to fall backwards and hit his head on the floor.
Officers attended alongside paramedics and the victim was taken to a London hospital for medical attention. Fowkes was arrested at the scene and later charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm without intent.
The 61 year old, of Hopgarden Close in Lamberhurst, pleaded guilty at Maidstone Crown Court and was sentenced to one year and 10 months’ imprisonment on Friday 13 March 2026. He was also made the subject of a 10-year restraining order not to contact the victim.
Investigating officer, Detective Constable Chris Welham, said:
‘Fowkes’ reaction was entirely disproportionate following a trivial disagreement about the highway code, which nearly cost the victim his life. ‘It is right that the judge ordered an immediate custodial sentence and I hope this – alongside the lengthy restraining order – offers the victim some comfort following such a traumatic incident for him and his family. ‘This case acts as a reminder to road users to act responsibly and remain calm during stressful moments while on the move.’
