Gillingham officer wins national award

A Gillingham beat officer has won a national award for his dedication in building strong relationships within the community he serves.

PC Isuru Ranaweera was awarded the ‘Communicator of the Year’ award during a ceremony held in Hull on Tuesday 3 March as part of the National Community Engagement Conference.

The officer works across Chatham, Rochester and Gillingham and attends and organises various community engagement events, ensuring he regularly meets and talks to local residents.

Through his role PC Ranaweera has worked tirelessly to build up strong relationships with local residents, businesses and organisations.

He also utilises technology to provide policing updates, crime prevention initiatives and fraud alerts, helping to reach those who may not be able to attend organised events.

Chief Inspector Paul Diddams said: ‘Through his role PC Ranaweera has helped to promote diversity and inclusion within the community. He has worked with colleagues to ensure residents are encouraged to report policing concerns and that they feel supported and confident when doing so. ‘I’m pleased PC Ranaweera has been recognised with this award, it is a testament to his dedication and positive impact he has had within the community.’

Talking about his job, PC Ranaweera said: ‘Throughout my time as a beat officer I have met and got to know many residents and businesses. ‘Those I know now feel confident to report and raise any ongoing policing concerns directly with me and my fellow colleagues and they know we will investigate any issues raised and that they will be acted upon as appropriate. ‘I feel honoured to have received this award, and I will continue to serve my community to the very best of my ability.’
