Nine year jail sentence following Ramsgate fatal assault

A jail sentence has been handed to a Ramsgate resident who killed a man following a single punch.

Marshall Mitchell, 35, punched a member of the public in an unprovoked attack outside a pub in Harbour Street, on Friday 28 March 2025.

Following the attack, the victim fell to the floor, hitting his head on the ground. He was taken to a London hospital due to the severity of his injuries.

Officers attended the scene alongside other emergency services, but Mitchell had fled the area prior to their arrival. Investigators identified Mitchell through reviewing CCTV of the attack, and he was arrested the next day on Saturday 29 March. He was later charged with manslaughter.

On Friday 18 April 2025, the victim of the attack, 68 year old Jim Castle, died in hospital. The post-mortem examination concluded a traumatic brain injury to be the cause of his death.

Mitchell, of Crescent Road, Ramsgate, pled guilty and was sentenced to nine years in prison at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday 1 December 2025.

A single punch led to irreversible consequences, leaving a family devastated and grieving.  ‘I welcome the sentence handed down by the court and hope it offers some measure of justice to the victim’s loved ones. This tragic incident serves as a reminder to others: a single moment of aggression can be fatal. Think before you act.’
