Kent Police officers in Ashford have been discussing safety with the public as part of ongoing work to keep women and girls safe.
Members of the Community Safety Unit were on hand at a pop-up gazebo in the town centre on Wednesday 20 July 2022, telling residents and visitors about a number of schemes recently introduced by Kent Police and Ashford Borough Council.
Officers spoke to women and girls about any safety concerns they have, and gave advice on schemes including the Ashford Streetwise app and the Safe Spaces now operating.
Streetwise is a smartphone app which identifies areas and routes in and around the town centre with monitored CCTV, good street lighting and high footfall. Users can select their preferred safety features. The app also offers alerts and states the locations of defibrillators and emergency trauma packs.
Ashford now also has a network of Safe Spaces, which are businesses and other places where people can go to if they need help or support. The premises have a sticker in the window and their locations are also shown on the app.
A further event was held the same day at the Elwick Club, where officers and members of the public discussed similar issues.
As well as the schemes mentioned above, those present were told about recent alterations to the Memorial Gardens designed to improve safety, and increased CCTV in the town centre.
Other schemes introduced include mirrors in some alleyways to improve visibility, SmartTag kits given to licenced premises to assist crime investigation, and bystander training sessions to instruct people on how they can assist in an emergency.
Officers will return to the town centre for a 'Walk and Talk' event between 6pm and 10pm on Friday 29 July and look forward to hearing from residents and visitors.
