Rogue trader roofing scam in New Ash Green

Residents are reminded to be on guard against rogue traders following suspicious activity in New Ash Green.

It is reported this month that a pensioner living in an area close to North Ash Road was cold called by a man claiming they had a loose roof tile.

Before the victim had given permission for any work the man climbed a ladder and removed several tiles, leaving a large hole in the roof.

The victim was pressured into giving him £1,500, following demands for payment.

The incident happened on 10 October and was reported to Kent Police on 18 October. It is believed other homes in the area may have been targeted.

The suspect was aged in his 50s and accompanied by a younger man, possibly in his late teens. They were travelling in a blue Honda CRV. An investigation is ongoing. 

Reports of similar suspicious activity have also been brought to the attention of officers in Edenbridge, where two men have been offering work to roofs and guttering and knocking on the doors of homes in areas including Ridge Way.

They were travelling in a white Peugeot Partner van.

Deter fraudsters

Kent Police is reminding residents of steps to take to deter doorstep fraudsters, who often seek to carry out work which is either completely unnecessary or which is substandard.

• Do not deal with people who knock on your door offering work on your home or garden and if you have any concerns call the police.
• Genuine companies will not expect cash in advance or tell you to go to the bank to withdraw money.
• Use reputable traders who are members of the KCC Trading Standards approved trader scheme Trading Standards Checked.
• Ask for quotes in writing and check that the tradesperson is from the company they say they are from.
• Ring at least three traders to get a feel for an average price for the job.
