The Independent Gold Advisory Group fulfils a valuable role as a ‘critical friend’ to Operation Magenta, providing independent advice on the development and review of policy, procedures and practices identified through the course of the investigation.

Its membership includes members of the public and representatives of organisations that are independent from the police service, whose role is to help Operation Magenta to gain and retain the trust and confidence of the affected families by providing the Gold commander and senior team with the opportunity to discuss how the investigation might impact upon the families and the wider community.

The role of the Independent Gold Advisory Group is not one of formal scrutiny, but to provide a safeguard against disadvantaging any affected families through mistaken beliefs or a lack of knowledge or understanding.

The term ‘independent’ refers to both the nature of the advisors and also the advice they provide, meaning they carry no responsibility or liability for the outcome of decisions based upon their guidance.
